Invisible Rituals: Innocent Resilience

This work combines symbols of spirituality with daily acts of womanhood. The engravings on acrylic layers resemble symbols in Islamic art and other spiritual practices, while at the center stands a young girl checking if her shorts are long enough.

For me, this gesture comes from growing up in Iran with the strict dress code. Even after immigrating I sometimes feel that I brought some of those restrictions into my life in the US. I think these small negotiations between identity and clothing for women living under restrictions, is such an innocent act that in their way feels holy to me.
